- Women have been denied equality in the Constitution. And therefore in the treatment of the law as it pertains to gender. It is time for everyone to be given the respect they deserve.
- Twenty-four other states in the United States (including Texas) have added gender equality to their State Constitutions. It is time to give Minnesota citizens the opportunity to vote for an Equal Rights Amendment.
- Recent events have shown clearly that despite claims of equality in the law, women still face inequality due to sexual harassment, inequitable pay and workplace discrimination. And the remedy in the courts has proven to be unequal because gender is not a protected class in the Constitution. Our courts are an uncertain place to determine the fairness of rights for over half our population.
- The United States Constitution didn't specify something was strictly "male" until the 14th amendment (1868) which clarified this meant Male and not human or Female. This is the first time one gender was specified over another.
- Now is the time to take the next step towards a more equal Minnesota.
During this Minnesota legislative season, ask where your Legislator stands on the issue of an Equal Rights Amendment. Ask them to publicly support the ERA.

Why were the mid-term elections so important? Our government is set up with checks and balances so that no one branch of the government (Executive, Legislative, Judicial) can become too powerful. Each branch is restrained by the other two -- or is supposed to be. Before the mid-term elections the Executive branch (the President) and the Legislative branch (Senate & House) were all conservative, and the Judicial branch looked to be headed that way too.
In the 2018 mid-term elections all 435 seats in the House of Representatives were voted on. We needed to gain 23 seats to tip the balance to liberal. In the Senate 35 seats were up for election -- we needed 28 of those seats to flip the Senate. Every seat matters! We did manage to flip the House (gained 40 seats!), we did not flip the Senate -- the balance of power is now certainly much better in our Federal Government. This could greatly effect issues such as Roe v. Wade, immigration laws, Medicaid expansion, education, taxes, labor rights and of course getting an ERA! Every vote matters! [Learn more at THE WEEK] In Minnesota we also managed to flip the House -- this should ensure we get heard in committees and passed on to the floor. But the Senate still needs encouragement to support the ERA -- so contact your senator today! |
