We stand corrected. Since Betty. Folliard's letter to the editor was published (click here to read), we have learned that the Rules Committee is NOT subject to the 2nd Deadline rule. They can take up HF212 any time this session, but let's not wait to contact Representative Peppin for scheduling a hearing. We can not take "no" for an answer.
My grandmother was 22 when Alice Paul drafted the Equal Rights Amendment. Grandmother lived to be 100 but struggled to survive on less than $500 a month in Social Security benefits because of her status as a farm wife. In the 1960s, my mother had to lie about how many kids she had in order to get a job to support those kids and, despite her intelligence and drive, worked in an underpaid clerical role. I am in my mid-50s and have been earning 78 cents to a man’s dollar for almost 40 years. My daughter is 30, and I don’t want her to face the same work and pay discrimination. The time for the ERA is now.

House Minority Leader Paul Thissen has sent a letter to House Majority Leader Joyce Peppin requesting that she grant a hearing on HF 212 - a resolution urging Congress to remove the deadline for the ratification of the federal ERA. Read his letter here. For more background information and arguments in favor -- check out Betty Foillar's Star Tribune commentary here. Or check both links on the News page.
Previously Peppin had been quoted saying she "doesn't like resolutions". Follow Thissen's lead and let her know how you feel. She should be doing what the people want. Not granting a hearing because she personally doesn't like resolutions is not okay!

See the previous blog post for names, phone numbers and emails of who else to notify.
Today is a perfect day to call or email every member of the House Rules Committee (see list below) and ask members to champion the ERA by telling Rep. Peppin to hear the House's side of the bill to Congress to remove the deadline for ratification of the proposed Equal Rights Amendment to the US Constitution -- HF212 . The senate side of the bill (SF113) has already passed.
Rep. Peppin said to one of our co-authors of #ERAMN HF212 that she'd heard from 3 people asking her to hold a hearing but she 'doesn't like resolutions'. We have until 1 week from today--that's Friday, March 27--to inspire her better nature. Can you help?

The fight for an Equal Rights Amendment is getting press again here in MN after SF113 was passed in the Senate and the push for an equal rights amendment in the Minnesota Constitution continues.
Check out this recent article in the Minneapolis Star/Tribune:
After 42 years, the ERA returns by Lori Sturdevant; March 13, 2015

ERA SF#113: Remove the deadline to ratify the ERA for the US Constitution -- had passed in the MN Senate Rules Committee
On Wednesday, March 11 at 9:00 am. the ERA SF#113 (Resolution to Congress to remove the deadline on the Equal Rights Amendment for ratifying it in the US Constitution) was heard in the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration in room 107 of the Minnesota State Capitol.
Senator Sandy Pappas carried the bill and championed it in the Senate. It sailed through the MN Senate Rules Committee with little opposition--except from Sens. Fischbach & Hann.
Great work all and thanks to those of you who were at the committee meeting.
The bill now moves to the floor of the Senate for a vote. Watch for the alert that will go out when a vote is scheduled.
Here are some things you can do to help:

When: 8 March
Where: Everywhere around the globe
What: International Women's Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a national holiday.
Why: Suffragettes campaigned for women's right to vote. The word 'Suffragette' is derived from the word "suffrage" meaning the right to vote. International Women's Day honours the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women's success, and reminds of inequities still to be redressed. ~from International Women's Day website.
In the Twin Cities:
KFAI will celebrate IWD with 24 hours of programming starting at midnight March 9. This day of special broadcasting provides opportunities for women and girls voices and issues to be heard on the airwaves. All of the shows are produced and hosted by women and girls from the Twin cities. KFAI is a volunteer community based radio station. Tune to 90.3 in Minneapolis and 106.7 in St. Paul.
